The spiral is a symbol of the cyclical nature of life, with no clear beginning or end. A constant evolution. And an enduring symbol to me personally. One of my ultimate favourites. A magnificent portal and the sometimes hard protective home for the crab.
The constellation of stars was originally conceived as a scarab beetle in Ancient Egypt while in Mesopotamia it was represented by a turtle. Both hard outer shell, squishy centre. In each case, the animal representative of the sign was perceived as "pushing" the sun across the heavens, initiating the summer solstice - Its primary a northern hemisphere constellation!
The crab (Latin: Cancer) itself made its way into our modern zodiac via Greek mythology after it distracted Hercules during his battles for Hera (The goddess and queen of marriage, women, and family, and the protector of women during childbirth) After Hercules crushed it - She then immortalised the creature by giving it a place among the stars.
